Friday Fitspiration: Choosing a workout buddy

Working out isn't always fun and it's certainly not easy. You may choose to workout with a friend for moral support. Here are some tips to choosing your workout buddy wisely:

  1. Choose someone with similar athletic ability. You want to make sure that your buddy isn't holding you back. If you are a runner and your partner has a hard time walking a mile then your partnership is not going to work out. You are going to feel held back and although your partner will be getting that extra push from you, they will feel discouraged that they cannot keep up
  2. Find someone who is dependable. Making sure your schedules are somewhat in sync is very important. Also, if you have someone who misses workouts, you are more likely to skip out as well.
  3. Comparable goals. You don't have to have the exact same goals as your buddy. However, they should be similar. If you are trying to gain muscle mass and your buddy is trying to lose 20 pounds,  you won't be doing the same exercises in the gym and will be losing some of that motivation from your buddy.
  4. Honesty is the key. It's great to have someone cheering you on. It's even better to have someone who is honest with you. For example, if you are being lazy and not pushing yourself on the treadmill, your workout buddy might let you know that you need to turn up the intensity.
Hope these tips help! Choose your buddy wisely. Don't let anyone interfere with your goals!

Beauty Tip Tuesday: DIY Exfoliating Face Scrub

So I've mentioned a couple of times that I'm addicted to beauty products. I always feel like I need something and I always want to try the newest products. Recently, I've been wanting to buy an exfoliating face scrub. I had already purchased a 2 pack face scrub so I knew I couldn't justify buying more. This is when I decided to make my own with products I already had in the house. Keep reading to figure out how!

What you need:
  • Face wash of your choice
  • Sugar (about 1 tablespoon)
Directions:
  1. Put about a nickel size amount of face wash in your hand
  2. Slowly add sugar until desired consistency
  3. Rub together to lather
  4. Gently massage into face
  5. Rinse

My face felt silky smooth after I did this! Hope you like it!

My Weekend in Photos!

Ahh how did Monday come so soon?! I had such a busy weekend and time flew by. On both Saturday and Sunday, I attended the 3rd annual Dolores Evans Alumni Invitational Basketball Tournament. I also was lucky enough to be a guest judge for Binghamton University's Battle of the Bands Queen Edition. All five bands were very talented but the 1st place prize went to Phoenix and the Raven! Here are some photos from my busy weekend!

Friday Fitspiration: Don't cheat yourself!

So, I've been working out for about a year and a half now. Working out is not always fun and I found that sometimes I was just going through the motions just to get it done. Recently, I realized that I've been cheating myself in the gym. Lately, I've been working much harder and using proper form. What a difference I've been feeling! If we are going to work out we have to do it all the way! The only person who will suffer from it is the person not doing it! Here are some tips on how to make sure you are not cheating yourself:
  1. Hands free! Whether you're on the treadmill, elliptical, or arc trainer...don't hold onto the bars! I promise you won't fall off! Plus, you are working your core because you have to work harder to stabilize yourself! You will get a better workout if you are hands free!
  2. Leave the books, magazines and phones at home or in your locker! You are there to work out not to read and text! You should be focused on getting the most out of your workout!
  3. Proper form. When doing any exercise, it is important to use proper form. Especially when weight training. Improper form can result in injury and your muscles not to form correctly.
  4. Sweat it out! If you are not sweating, you are not working hard enough. Simple as that!
  5. Step outside your comfort zone! If you are running and you're sweating like a pig, your legs are on fire and you just wanna stop...keep going! When it gets difficult, work harder. THAT'S when you will see results!

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Sock Bun

Chic buns are really in style this season! My hair is about medium length and not very thick so I haven't been able to acheive the look.  So, if you have hair like mine or if you just want a better look to your bun, try this:

For the Bun Maker:

  • Grab a sock (preferably one that is mismatched or one with holes like mine)
  • Cut off the toe of the sock
  • Roll sock into a donut shape

Creating your bun:

  • Put hair in a ponytail
  • Pull ponytail through your bun maker and wrap your ends around it
  • Slowly roll the bun maker towards your head, spreading your hair to cover the bun maker as you go
  • Tuck in any loose strand and make sure you bun maker is not showing!
  • Tip: I used a white sock but for darker hair it's usually better to use a darker colored sock so it is less noticeable if you have any slip ups!
These bun makers can be bought in stores but this route is much more budget friendly! :-)

You can adjust the size of your bun by choosing different sized socks!

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Color Blocking Nail Art

Color blocking is trending in the fashion world this season. Color blocking is a technique where blocks of solid colors are placed next to each other to add visual interest. This technique is usually seen with clothing but I decided to try it on my nails! This time, I decided to only do my accent nail (ring finger) but this would look great on all of your nails!

What you need:
  • 3 (or more if you want!) different color polishes of your choice
  • Scissors
  • Scotch tape
  • Clear top coat
  1. Cut tape into different shapes that you would like for your design and set aside
  2. Paint a base coat of one of the colors on all of your nails (ex: I painted all of my nails orange to start)
  3. Let polish dry
  4. Place "tape shapes" on your nails and paint your remaining 2 polishes around tape as desired. See picture below!
  5. Apply top coat and your good to go!

I Love Mondays!

Happy Monday! ...Ok, I lied. I DO NOT love Mondays! After waking up this morning I realized that Monday's are dreadful enough as it is and I tend to make things harder on myself! Something has to change...

Here are some tips to start your Monday off right:

  • Lay out your clothes the night before. My morning started off with me putting a shirt on then throwing it because I hated how it was fitting. Then I started going through my drawers like an animanl desperately trying to find something I felt comfortable in. Now, I have a big mess to clean after work! Laying out your clothes will eliminate this stress AND save you time!

  • Prepare food the night before. If your breakfast items do not need to be refrigerated or frozen, get them out and ready to go the night before. Also, make sure lunches are prepared for the next day. Another time saver!

  • Eat breakfast. Getting your breakfast items out the night before makes it easier to grab a bite to eat so there's no excuses! Nothing makes your Monday's more miserable than a growling tummy...

  • Treat yourself. Grab your favorite coffee, hot chocolate or just make yourself your favorite breakfast to start your day off right. Maybe try a nice soothing face mask in the morning? Whatever works for you!

  • Crank the music. My alarm is set to wake me up with Wild 104 and I listen to the radio all morning as I get ready. The music puts a little pep in my step!

  • Have a good laugh. Start your day off with a funny video. There's a ton to choose from on YouTube. It's amazing how smiling and laughing instantly makes us feel better. Your co-workers might start to think you're a "morning person"!
Have a great week!

Friday Fitspiration: Get Motivated

No Motivation? Try these tips:

Look at fitness blogs. Try my Tumblr page. It's full of inspiring pictures!

Imagine what your body will look and feel like when you reach your goal. Sometimes while I'm running, I'll start thinking about how good reaching my goal will make me feel. This gives me that extra push I need to keep going.

Take progress pictures. As you continue working out you can look at how far you've come and realize you don't want to go back to where you started!

Get a workout buddy. I don't mean someone that you can sit at the gym and talk with. I mean someone who works out hard and you can talk about how hard you worked AFTER. Push each other to work harder! You can also swap ideas about healthy recipes, new workouts, etc.

Think of the regret you'll feel if you don't finish your workout. One of my favorite quotes is "Suffer the pain of discipline or suffer the pain of regret."
